PITTSBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners will discuss the Reeves Farm Development in a meeting on Monday night and consider approving Phase One of the project.

"This is a major development project on the west side of town," town spokesperson Colby Sawyer said.

The project would ultimately transform nearly 500 acres along Route 64, west of downtown Pittsboro, into thousands of homes and retail.

"We know having a place for people to live is going to be certainly very impactful," Sawyer said. "We know people want to be in Pittsboro. This will facilitate that."

The development is one of several in Pittsboro's pipeline that address the rapidly growing area.

According to the State Demographer's latest municipal population estimates, Pittsboro's population grew by 31%, reaching nearly 6,000 people by 2024.

Although there are positive reactions to growth, some residents near these developments are concerned about the potential impact.

"I guess I'm just worried about it causing more traffic through here," Watson Fitts said.

Officials said there is a need for housing. Other projects, such as Disney's Asteriacommunity, aims to bring more than 4,000 homes to Chatham Park, where Chase Miller works.

"I think there is a lot of positive possibilities with the growth," Miller said. "Obviously, more jobs and more people coming to the area is a good thing."

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners will also discuss the Chatham Park South Village Small Area Plan.

"Pittsboro has been somewhat constrained in growth recently outside of the Chatham Park area due to a lack of water and sewer availability," Sawyer said. "However ... we've been able to allow this type of growth to occur outside of just Chatham Park, and so we're very excited."
